September is always a busy month for personal training, people return from far away exotic locations and either realise that the all inclusive holiday was a little too inclusive or they take a look back through their holiday snaps and wish the thong hadn’t been quite so tight in a couple of the beach shots.
So I get a call, a client starting back up or a new client that has decided now is the time. With Christmas holidays on the horizon and the last all you can eat buffet still on the memory its time to take action.
But this roller-coaster ride of weight loss, then time off to put it back on again doesn’t need to happen.
I’ve just got back from a week away.
Ok so it wasn’t all inclusive, there were no palm trees but there was cider and bbq’s a plenty!
But in the week i was away i did only ONE workout…..which for those that know me is unheard of.
However in that week i probably did just as much exercise than i do in a normal week…maybe more. So this allowed me a few glasses of red, a tipple of the local cider (plus some of the old mans home brew….ooooooh). I ate freely, cooked breakfasts most mornings and there was a large chocolate brownie that was cooked for me that I may have partaken in the odd slice of.
But i came back in pretty good shape, no weight gain, feeling super healthy.
How i hear you ask….simple…
I surf….or at least I try to surf
But you said you didn’t ‘work out’ i hear you cry…….and i didn’t
“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” ― Confucius
The same goes with fitness
I didn’t consider the 2 hours i spent paddling, popping up on the board, balancing, falling off and repeating the process exercise…or the 30 min walk up and down the sand dunes there and back exercise.
My arms ached as they always do to the point of not being able to move them, my lungs burned as I paddled against the waves to get out, legs tired from walking…now trying to kick and then balance me as I stand on a floating stick…..but not once did I think about the tiredness as the shear enjoyment of what I was doing took over.
Im a personal trainer, and my job is to help people lose weight generally, occasionally I help people to gain muscle, sometimes I work with them to improve fitness and in turn health.
But what does a personal trainer really do?
I am helping people to get to a position where they are more confident in life, therefore happier and in turn doing the stuff they enjoy and aren’t holding back in doing so.
So why am i telling you this?
You may think I’m selling myself out here, doing myself out of work
But getting fit or into shape is just an initial step to many things, joining a gym you have been too worried to go to due to your lack of fitness, getting into a swimming costume to play with your kids in the pool or simply going for long walks on a hot day in only a vest!
As I tell clients, my job is to get them to the point where they can exercise by themselves, educate them so they are confident in what they are doing and don’t need me any more….apart from maybe the occasional ass whipping.
One of things I try and do is to find things people like to do in the sessions and work around it, use that to make sessions enjoyable and therefore clients happier to push harder, to get results faster.
This spills over though to life beyond personal training
You are fit enough to get back into tennis, fit enough to rejoin the dance classes again and last the distance, you love hill walking and are hitting the lake district again or just Epping forest at the weekends with the kids.
Finding something you really enjoy, a physical activity you love and can incorporate into your life…especially those times when fitness is the last thing on your mind like a holiday is what will keep you healthier and fitter easier, without thinking about it, enjoying it or viewing it as a chore.
Surfing, tennis, squash, water skiing, Horse riding, snorkelling, swimming, hiking, beach bat n ball, windsurfing, ping pong, badminton, fencing or even just walking…..whatever takes your fancy.
Do these things for an hour a day on holiday and you will come back no worse off than when you left; possibly in better shape…imagine that!
No yo yo’ing through the year, from holiday to training to holiday to training.
But if you DO need that little boost to get you back on track, to get that last bit of fat loss, to get you started on the right path or even training for a specific sport or activity then I’m always here to help and it shouldn’t be soooooo much of a big step
and some of my clients actually enjoy the training sessions on that journey too!
