The gym, It’s been a while since you visited last
a little nervousness as you park up
hoping the receptionist won’t mention your lack of attendance recently
you jump on the closest cardio machine to the entrance as you walk in
just to keep to the back, out of sight
something nice and easy to edge you back in to things
not really breaking a sweat
watching a bit of tv
is this you and your gym experience?
what next?
the weights machines are busy and everyone looks like they know what they are doing
so you jump on the first thing that’s free
the tricep extension machine which you kinda remember how to work plus it feels like it’s working the area you want to improve…. thank god
you dont want to be in one of those gym videos where someone is being filmed doing something completely idiotic
you do ten reps because you are sure thats what the guy who showed you around said to do
have a little break
then repeat that 3 times
then look for another machine that’s free
this is how most of my clients previous gym experience went
no understanding of what to do
of how different exercise machines work
how it was helping me or what it was doing
feeling lost
maybe intimidated by the groups of low cut tshirt wearing guys in the free weights or gym bunny girls walking uphill for hours on the treadmill
a lack of understanding
loss of motivation
not getting the results the magazine said you should
leading to another period of ‘not having been to the gym in a while’
if this is you, and you still see that direct debit coming out of your account every month, in the hope you will get back on it soon, knowing in reality the place fills you with fear
then why not take a different approach
use a professional
learn how to use a gym properly, effectively, confidently… with a game plan, a strategy for the exact results you want
to minimise the time you have to spend there
in and out
a personal trainer worth their salt will be mostly interested in making sure you know what you are doing and why….so you can walk away confident that you can maintain this progress, keep motivated and enjoying the process
